Simulates Rowing
The WaterRower's patented WaterFlywheel has been designed to replicate the dynamics of a boat moving through water. By doing so it not only replicates the precise physiological benefits of rowing like no other, but captures many of the aesthetic pleasures as well.
Most rowing machines replicate the rowing action mechanically. This harsh action (as most rowing machine users will be aware) creates a mechanical fatigue, generating a soreness and aching which is not experienced when rowing. The WaterRower's WaterFlywheel replicates the action naturally, and hence is free from this mechanical fatigue. The exercise can be as pleasant a row down the river.
When rowing an oarsperson works to overcome the effect of drag acting on the boat. The faster the boat moves, the more drag is created the harder the oarsperson must work to maintain that speed. The limit to how much work can be done is the oarsperson, their physiology, their ability to do work. The WaterRower's WaterFlywheel exactly replicates this self paced dynamic.
When the oarsperson draws a stroke, they are not working to overcome a resistance, but to accelerate the mass of the boat and crew. Unlike resistance (used to generate the workout on most rowing machines) the mass remains constant throughout the stroke (it does not reduce towards the end of the stroke). The oarsperson works to accelerate the mass of the boat and crew evenly throughout the stroke. With the correct technique, this allows the oarsperson to spread the workout uniformly over all three major muscle groups. Importantly this uniform distribution is done in proportion to the muscle strength, catering for the variation between a individual physiques, improving the whole body benefit and helping to avoid injury.

Simply lift one end and the machine stores conveniently upright in about the space of a dining room chair.
The WaterRower's light wooden frame, the positioning of the WaterFlywheel close to the wheels, and the leverage effect provided by the rails, makes lifting almost effortless.
When stored the WaterRower's patented WaterFlywheel provides a low centre of gravity making the machine very stable.

The WaterRower seat has been ergonomically designed to provide maximum comfort. Supported on all four corners, the WaterRower seat is incredibly stable, gliding smoothly on eight urethane wheels.

The WaterRower footboard incorporates the all new Floating Heel Rest Design. The cup of the heel rest follows the heel as it is raise from the footboard providing stability and comfort from the beginning to end of each stroke. To adjust the heel rest position simply press the central button and this disengages the lock pins securing the footpads and allows them to move. That simple! Existing owners may retrofit the feature to their existing machine.

The WaterRower handle is made of Aluminium for strength and lightness. It has been formed in a tear drop shape so as to fit comfortably into the palm of the hand and avoid the over gripping, a common cause of tendonitis. The WaterRower Drive Strap is made of a high density polyester webbing due to its strength and lightness. Guided by nylon pulleys the Drive Strap does not wear and is maintenance free, requiring no messy lubrication.

The WaterRower tank is made from polycarbonate, one of the strongest plastics available. Other uses of polycarbonate include aircraft windscreens. Virtually indestructible, the tank is sealed, and is accessed via a small stopper. The water is normal municipal water which typically contains enough chlorine to remain clear for some time. The chlorine will degrade with exposure to light and needs to be periodically topped up with chlorine tablets provided.

The WaterRower clutch is the secret to the smoothness of the action. This precision-engineered mechanism is known as a spragg clutch. The benefit of a spragg clutch over other forms of clutches is that it engages instantaneously. Most clutches, by contrast, must index prior to engaging thus producing a jerky or jarring impact somewhere during the stroke.
